Malice was published in December 2012, so that’s a ten-year journey. I wrote the last page and then set about getting feedback and editing in 2010. J.G- I started writing Malice, or at least, writing down ideas and beginning research, in 2002.T.B.M- How long did it take you to get Malice (the first book in the Faithful and the Fallen series) published? Did you have to send it to different publishers first?.Tolkien for his epic, breath-taking world-building, and Gemmell for his flawed, wonderfully relatable characters and his ability to grab you and keep you turning pages into the small hours of the morning. Since then I’ve read too many wonderful authors to mention, but for influence and inspiration I would have to say Tolkien and Gemmell. They are the two original fantasy authors who captivated me during my reading years. J.G – For me it has to be Tolkien and Gemmell.T.B.M- Who do you think is the most influential Fantasy author and why?.I ended up thinking, hmm, why not give it a go…

Things like plot, character and talent! My children jumped on the idea, though, and any dad will be able to tell you how that turns out. I laughed and told her not to be ridiculous, pointing out that to do that there were certain ingredients required that I was definitely lacking. It was only when I found myself at home 24/7 that I decided I could do with a hobby that was manageable from home, and my wife Caroline suggested I try writing a book. I’d never had aspirations to become a writer, not because I didn’t want to be one – I’ve always been an avid reader and loved the thought of being a writer – but I had never even considered myself capable of the task. To pay the bills we set up a vintage furniture business. Due to health problems with my daughter Harriett, who is profoundly disabled, I stepped out of teaching and joined my wife at home as Harriett’s full-time carer.
